Here's the BBC News piece on the renovation work that will be hapening to HMS Victory. We carried out the 3D Laser scan survey an supplied accurate elevation drawings of the hull on behalf of BAE systems - further details of our work is here and below is the Youtube video we created from the scan data.

Back in September we spent some time working with our colleagues on the About Houses project in the Friulian region of Italy. Part of the conference was a vist to the De Corte house in Ovasta, a small hillside village in Ovasta. This house has been owned by the same family since the 16th Century and is a fascinating mix of heritage and modern day living. We spent a day surveying with the laser scanner and panoramic camera, recording as much of the house as possible and below is some of the video we have produced from the laser scan data.

Here's a short video on some survey work we did for the Royal Commission, recording and underground waterwheel in a lead mine in Mid Wales. Laser scanning is the idea way to record heritage areas like this as it is portable, doesn't require too much light and can provide both academic and general public visualisation of important items.

Big thanks to Rhydian at ICY Ltd for help with setting up underground and carrying survey kit up the hillside, it may look quite clean and dry in the animation, but I'm still cleaning mud out of all the survey kit!

We've also been busy with engineering projects, from surveying curved roof structures for the new development at Kings Cross station, London, to working with long time partners Parkol Marine in Whitby on modifying fishing vessels for greater efficiency. We've got some interesting projects lined up for the Autumn and we're looking forward to the next meeting of the houses project and finding out what our Italian partners have been up to.

The team at Pointools have been spreading the word about the work we did on HMS Victory using their excellent software. See the American Surveyor website for an example.

We've had a busy few months on both the marine and survey side. Back in June I spent two days up in the North of Scotland surveying an excavated Broch at Applecross campsite on behalf of the Applecross Archaeological society. Working with Owen Kilbride and the team, we carried out a full set of colour scans and produced a series of high resolution plan view images and some animation of the site. Some of the results are here on Youtube.

We've added a user story on some of the marine laser scanning project we've been working on over the past few moths to the website. Working with a variety of clients, we've been all over the UK and even managed ot soak up some sun in Malta.

The new user story is here and there should be some more information on some archaeological work we did last year coming soon.

TugScanning_01The latest video we've added to our YouTube channel is about some work we did for a team of Naval Architects. Approached by a client to transform a 1950's US Navy tug in to stylish pleasure yacht, the team required an accurate model of the existing hull as a starting point. During a very chilly day in late November, the vessel was loaded on to Parkol Engineering's floating drydock in Whitby, Norh Yorkshire and lifted out of the water. A quick wash to clean the worst of the detritus from the hull and we were able to get in to the dock an perform a series of scans, using the Faro LS880, capturing the hull and superstructure before the vessel was refloated. The scan data was then used to model the hull shape and supply both 2D lines and a 3D IGES hull model, which we used as the basis to design a hull section that faired in with minimum disruption to the existing hull.

The video is here.. and the PDF version of the user story is here..

This animation shows some of the data we collected on a local project. As it is off the beaten track and was accessible only by foot or tractor (see below!) it's a great place to try out new kit and minimise the amount of equipment needed to do a scan job.

DJA_scanmobile02_smallThe cottage is now undergoing renovation - once it's completed, we'll go back and scan it again to give a comparison.

That's the first of the YouTube videos up - it's some animations through the pointclouds we collected over a couple of days at Drax power station in Yorkshire on behalf of Alstom Power. All of this data was captured with the Faro LS880, working off the crane beams and topsides of the structure over a period of 2 days. The scans were tied together using a Total station and a set of spherical targets. Even with downsampling, the full data set in Pointools comes to some 550 million point, so not all of it is displayed in the video.

3D Laser scanning videos and user stories.

We've been busy producing some animated flyby's using Pointools' excellent animation wizard to illustrate the kind of information we can record with our range of laser scanners. As we have been involved with everything from power stations, through fishing vessels to 16th century farm houses and Roman sarcophagii, we'll be putting up a series of short video's on our new YouTube channel. Hopefully it will give a flavour of what we can supply. For further details on each of the projects, see the corresponding user stories here...

The videos are available on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/derijonesassoc

The power station scanning project video is  here..., more to follow in a short while!
