Holly Lodge School, Smethwick, Birmingham, UK.
This was processed using Pointools / Rhino, creating accurate geometry and then applying orthographic texture maps in Maya. This model was supplied to the clients some 5 days after being given the project (no, we didn't sleep much!). We also supplied a full photographic survey used to map on to our orthographic roughs to add greater detail to the model for rendering. At short notice, we were asked to supply a basic model of an entire school campus to act as the starting point for some animation and visualisation images for a re-modelling exercise. Tasked with the project on Thursday afternoon, we completed the bulk of the 3D laser scanning over the weekend, to avoid interrupting classes and minimising health and safety issues. Some 38,000m2 of site was covered, using the longer range Trimble to pick off larger facades and working with the faster Faro scanner to pick up the more complex areas.

This animation shows some of the data we collected on a local project. As it is off the beaten track and was accessible only by foot or tractor (see below!) it's a great place to try out new kit and minimise the amount of equipment needed to do a scan job.

3D Laser scanning videos and user stories. We've been busy producing some animated flyby's using Pointools' excellent animation wizard to illustrate the kind of information we can record with our range of laser scanners. As we have been involved with everything from power stations, through fishing vessels to 16th century farm houses and Roman sarcophagii, we'll be putting up a series of short video's on our new YouTube channel.
