Deri Jones & Associates (DJA) were approached by English Heritage to assist in the processing of scan data of Howden Minster church that had been gathered by another company. English Heritage had been given a large amount of raw scan data and were looking to use this data to create a 3D model of the chapter house for further investigation.

Processing
Working with data gathered by another company created challenges in accurately registering and aligning the scan clouds, with no reference objects. Using Faro Scene, we managed to identify sufficient common points from a photogrammetry survey carried out earlier to give a sufficiently good result. 3D modelling from the pointcloud was carried out in Rhino, adding content from meshed details of the fine carvings to a key structure modelled using CAD. We delivered a DVD containing Pointclouds, interactive 3D model and viewer and 2D PDF drawings of the site, showing scan locations and quicktime VR images from each scan.
